Towers buildings to receive repairs
Aug 11, 2023
The Altoona Housing Authority has hired The Houck Group to recaulk the 2-inch-wide seams between the large concrete exterior wall panels at the southern ends of the two downtown towers to stop water from leaking into the stairwells.
The walls at the Green Avenue Tower and Eleventh Street Tower buildings are about 80 feet wide and several stories tall, and there are both vertical and horizontal seams.
The company will remove the existing caulking and replace it with a silicone product, according to Maintenance Supervisor Greg Stiteler.
The sun tends to dry out the caulk, Stiteler said.
Such work has been done a couple times before in the history of the buildings.
The firm specializes in such work, he said.
Stiteler obtained three quotes prior to the contract award.
Because the firm is a participant in the state’s COSTARS cooperative purchasing program, formal bid advertisements weren’t necessary, according to authority Executive Director Cheryl Johns.
